Aeration

The availability and exchange of air within the root environment.

Aerial root

A root that develops above the growing medium rather than entirely inside it.

Aroid

A plant belonging to the Araceae family, which includes many familiar indoor foliage plants.

Etiolation

Pale, elongated growth associated with insufficient light.

F

Fertilizer burn

Plant damage associated with excessive fertilizer or a high concentration of soluble salts around roots.

H

Humidity

The amount of water vapor in air; relative humidity describes it in relation to the air’s capacity at a given temperature.

I

Indirect light

Light that reaches a plant after scattering, reflection, or filtering rather than as an unobstructed direct sunbeam.

Internode

The length of stem between two adjacent nodes.

L

Leaching

Moving dissolved substances out of a growing medium with water that drains away.

Lux

A unit of illuminance weighted to human visual sensitivity.

M

Macronutrient

A nutrient that plants require in relatively large amounts compared with micronutrients.

Micronutrient

An essential nutrient needed in smaller quantities, such as iron or manganese.

N

Node

The point on a stem where leaves, buds, or branches attach and where growth can develop.

NPK

The standard sequence for nitrogen, available phosphate, and soluble potash figures on many fertilizer labels.

P

Perlite

A lightweight, heat-expanded volcanic material used in horticultural growing media.

Petiole

The stalk that connects a leaf blade to the plant’s stem.

pH

A measure describing how acidic or alkaline a solution or growing environment is.

Potting mix

A prepared growing medium designed for plants in containers.

Propagation

Root bound

A condition in which roots have densely occupied a container and may circle around its shape.

Root rot

A general term for decay and failure of roots, often associated with prolonged wetness and disease organisms.
