Variegation.
Differently coloured zones in leaves or stems, most often white, cream or yellow areas where cells lack functioning chlorophyll.
What it means for your plants
Variegated tissue does not photosynthesize or photosynthesizes weakly, so variegated cultivars need more light than green forms and grow more slowly. Cut out all-green reversion shoots promptly, since they outgrow the variegated growth.
Pothos Marble Queen kept in a dim corner loses much of its cream marbling, while green Jade in the same spot grows steadily.
Put it into practice
Grow a full pothos: 2,500–15,000 lux (more for variegated cultivars), water when the top quarter of the mix dries, prune above nodes, and root single-node cuttings.
Pothos care: light, watering, and pruning for full, leafy vines
