Aerial root.
A root that forms on a stem above the growing medium, used by climbing and epiphytic plants to anchor to supports and absorb moisture.
What it means for your plants
Aerial roots are normal in monstera, pothos and philodendron and are not a sign the pot is too small. Guide them onto a moss or coir pole, or into the mix, where they branch and help feed the plant; trimming a few with clean shears is harmless but unnecessary.
A Monstera deliciosa with aerial roots tucked into a moist coir pole typically produces larger, more fenestrated leaves.
Put it into practice
Grow Monstera deliciosa well: 10,000–20,000 lux, water when the top 3–5 cm is dry, a chunky bark mix, a moss pole, and the conditions that trigger split leaves.
Monstera deliciosa care: bright light, an airy mix, and a pole to climb
