THE PLANTPAL GLOSSARY

Node.

The point on a stem where one or more leaves attach and where buds and roots can form.

What it means for your plants

Make cuttings with at least one node, cutting about 1 cm below it, because the node holds the bud that becomes the new shoot. When pruning, cut just above a node to direct new growth there.

IN PRACTICE

A single-node pothos cutting kept at 20–25 °C usually shows roots within 2–4 weeks.

Put it into practice

Step-by-step pothos propagation: choosing nodes, cut length, water versus substrate, 20–25 °C for rooting in 2–4 weeks, and potting up at 2–5 cm of root.
