THE PLANTPAL GLOSSARY

Internode.

The section of stem between two adjacent nodes.

What it means for your plants

Internode length is a practical light gauge: compact internodes indicate adequate light, while stretching internodes on new growth usually mean the plant needs a brighter spot. Warm temperatures and high nitrogen also lengthen internodes somewhat.

IN PRACTICE

A pothos vine whose new leaves are 8 cm apart instead of 3 cm has been getting too little light.

Put it into practice

Grow a full pothos: 2,500–15,000 lux (more for variegated cultivars), water when the top quarter of the mix dries, prune above nodes, and root single-node cuttings.

Pothos care: light, watering, and pruning for full, leafy vines
