Acclimation.
The physiological adjustment of a plant’s leaves and tissues to a new level of light, temperature or humidity, which for light often means producing new leaves built for the new conditions.
What it means for your plants
Increase light in steps over 1–2 weeks, for example two or three hours of gentle morning sun first, then longer exposures. Leaves grown in shade have thinner cuticles and less protective pigment, so a sudden jump to 20,000–50,000 lux of direct sun can bleach or scorch them within a day.
A monstera moved from a north room to a south window spends a week a metre back from the glass before going to the sill.
Put it into practice
Understand bright indirect light, check the light reaching your plant, and adjust its position as windows, seasons and growth change.
