Potting mix.
A soilless growing medium formulated for containers, usually based on peat, coir or composted bark with perlite or other aggregates and lime.
What it means for your plants
Peat-based mixes are limed to about pH 5.5–6.5, and many include a starter fertilizer, so check the bag before feeding. Never substitute garden soil, which compacts, drains poorly and can carry pests and pathogens.
IN PRACTICE
A bag listing peat, perlite, lime and a wetting agent is a typical general-purpose indoor potting mix.
Put it into practice
Choose a suitable houseplant potting mix, understand bag labels and ingredients, and avoid drainage mistakes without relying on a universal soil recipe.
